Grilling Gifts for Pitmasters Who Already Own Every Tool

Hands sharpening a knife with the Tumbler Pro Camo Limited Edition rolling knife sharpener on a truck bed outdoors

By Team Tumbler

The best grilling gift for a pitmaster who owns every tool is a sharper edge on the knives they trim and slice with. Give the Tumbler Pro Starter Set to the serious smoker, the Tumbler Gift Bundle if they need a knife too, and a Tumbler Companion Strop or Protective Stand to someone who owns a Tumbler Rolling Knife Sharpener.

Key Takeaways

  • Most BBQ kits are missing one thing: a way to keep the slicing knife sharp. Trimming a fat cap and slicing through bark both depend on the edge.
  • Three picks: the Tumbler Pro Starter Set for the serious smoker, the Tumbler Gift Bundle (the Tumbler Original plus the Signature 8-inch Chef's Knife in German steel) for a tired knife drawer, and a strop or stand as an add-on.
  • A rolling sharpener sharpens long slicers in sections: reposition the knife instead of reaching.
  • Tumbler can't sharpen serrated knives, ceramic knives or scissors.
  • Gifts ordered Nov 1 through Dec 31, 2026 have until Jan 31, 2027 to be returned, and the Tumbler Digital Gift Card is delivered by email.

What do you get a pitmaster who already has everything?

Upgrade the knife work, not the pit. A serious griller already owns the smoker, the probe thermometer, the gloves and a shelf of rubs. What wears out between cooks is the edge on the knives they trim and slice with, and a sharpener restores it every time, on knives they already own.

The slice is where a long cook pays off. AmazingRibs' Clint Cantwell, reviewing brisket knives, writes that "With an 11-inch blade you are able to create a perfect slice of brisket or roast with one clean slicing motion" (AmazingRibs). That takes an edge that glides instead of saws. America's Test Kitchen's Hannah Crowley says a sharp knife lets you "use less force" because it "bites in right wherever you put it" instead of sliding off (America's Test Kitchen).

A sharpener also gets used between brisket weekends. Unless knives see all-day, everyday use, Zwilling's Bernard Janssen says sharpening is needed only "two to three times a year," and for a knife used daily he recommends "honing a few times a week" (Simply Recipes via AOL). One tool covers both: the Tumbler Original and Tumbler Pro each pair a diamond sharpening disc with an EdgeBoost honing disc for upkeep in between, steel on the Original and ceramic on the Pro.

What reviewers found:

  • Bartlow's BBQ, writing "As a backyard bbq pitmaster who values quality tools," tested the Tumbler Pro on four knives, including a pitmaster knife and a brisket knife, and wrote, "The 4-layer diamond disc is the star of the show." Tumbler sent the reviewer a sample (Bartlow's BBQ).
  • Taste of Home tested the Tumbler Original and said it "works exactly as advertised" and "makes the entire process foolproof" (Taste of Home).

Which grilling gift fits your pitmaster?

Match the gift to the kind of cook. Give the Tumbler Pro Starter Set to the smoker who fine-tunes everything, the Tumbler Gift Bundle to a griller whose knife has seen better days, and the Tumbler Pro Camo Limited Edition to the tailgate or campsite cook. A strop or stand suits someone who already owns a Tumbler.

Top pick: Tumbler Pro Starter Set

The Tumbler Pro Starter Set, with whetstone discs and a weighted stand, is for the pitmaster who logs every cook. In the box: the Tumbler Pro roller, a Magnet Holder Pro, whetstone discs in 3000 and 6000 grit, and a weighted Pro stand that's sold only in this set. According to the set's product page, that Magnet Holder Pro has four fixed angles (10°, 15°, 20° and 25°).

The 4-layer diamond disc sets the edge, and the whetstone discs polish it, with no freehand skill needed.

In this reel from Tumbler's Instagram, an olive-green Tumbler block and a roller with a dark disc labeled "#3000 grit" are shown, then the sharpened knife slices a raw chicken breast.

  • Who it's for: the smoker with a full knife roll who likes gear they can fine-tune
  • Skip it if: they sharpen freehand on a full whetstone kit and that's half the fun

Also great: Tumbler Gift Bundle

The Tumbler Gift Bundle with the Signature 8" Chef's Knife pairs the Tumbler Original with an 8-inch chef's knife in German steel, each piece individually packaged and ready to gift. It's a better knife for trimming and prep, plus the tool that keeps it sharp.

  • Who it's for: the griller with every pit tool and a dull prep knife
  • Skip it if: they already own a knife they love. Then the sharpener alone is the gift.

Also great for the tailgate and campsite cook: Tumbler Pro Camo Limited Edition

Under the camo finish sits a Tumbler Pro, with a 4-layer diamond disc, a ceramic honing disc and 15° and 20° angles. Its product page calls it "Built for the wild, engineered for precision."

  • Who it's for: the outdoor cook who also carries a hunting or pocket knife with a smooth edge. Our hunters' gift guide covers that side.
  • Skip it if: they cook only at home and want the whetstone discs and stand. Go with the Tumbler Pro Starter Set.

Budget pick: Tumbler Companion Strop or Tumbler Protective Stand

For a pitmaster who already owns a Tumbler, the Tumbler Companion Strop adds a leather polishing step once the sharpening is done. The Tumbler Protective Stand, a wood stand with a magnetic angle holder, gives the sharpener a home on the counter.

  • Who it's for: a Tumbler owner, or as an add-on to a bigger gift
  • Skip it if: they don't own a Tumbler yet. These are accessories, not sharpeners.

Already owns a sharpener: Tumbler Signature Chef's Knife 8"

If they already own a sharpener, give the knife. The Tumbler Signature Chef's Knife 8" is an all-purpose chef's knife in German steel, built, per its product page, for everything "From delicate slicing to heavier prep work."

  • Who it's for: the cook who sharpens regularly and wants a better knife for trimming and prep
  • Skip it if: they want a long brisket slicer; this is a chef's knife

Last-minute: Tumbler Digital Gift Card

The Tumbler Digital Gift Card arrives by email, so it works after shipping time runs out. More small add-ons are in our stocking stuffers guide (Oct 26).

Will a rolling sharpener handle BBQ knives?

Yes, for smooth-edge steel knives. Tumbler's FAQ lists kitchen knives, cleavers and smooth-edge hunting and folding knives. Long slicers take a little technique: work the edge in sections and reposition the knife, and raise the sharpener on a cutting board for tall blades. Serrated knives, ceramic knives and scissors are out.

Tumbler's list of the knives it can and can't sharpen starts with kitchen knives and cleavers, then adds "most hunting knives with a smooth edge" and smooth-edged folding knives.

Long slicers. A rolling sharpener sharpens long slicers in sections: reposition the knife instead of reaching. One BladeForums user's complaint about rolling sharpeners is that "long blades flex and throw everything off" (BladeForums). The fix is technique. For an extra-long knife, The Rational Kitchen says "you can sharpen in two stages" to cover the whole blade, moving the blade in the holder so the holder sits behind the section you're sharpening (The Rational Kitchen). Overlap the sections and keep the pressure light. Tumbler's setup instructions, including the tall-blade tip put it plainly: "Use a light amount of pressure!" Our guide to sharpening a long blade from heel to tip walks through it step by step.

Tall blades. For cleavers and tall chef's knives, the instructions call for propping the Tumbler Rolling Sharpener up on a cutting board, which lines it up with the cutting edge.

What it won't sharpen:

  • Serrated knives. Tumbler's FAQ rules out serrations for the roller.
  • Ceramic knives. Ceramic isn't magnetic, so a ceramic blade won't stay on the magnetic holder.
  • Scissors. Tumbler can't sharpen scissors or kitchen shears.
  • Granton-edge slicers. The scalloped hollows sit on the blade face, not the edge, but Tumbler's FAQ doesn't cover them, so check with Tumbler support before sharpening one.

How long it takes. It depends on the knife's condition and its last sharpening: about 2 to 12 minutes for one that's dull or long neglected, and about 60 seconds for a regular touch-up. Slicing technique is covered in our brisket slicing guide (Nov 16).

Which angle should BBQ knives use?

Follow the knife maker's spec first. As a rule of thumb, 20° suits hard-working trimming, boning and slicing knives, and 15° suits thinner Japanese-style knives. The Tumbler Original and Tumbler Pro both include 15° and 20° sides, and the Pro Starter Set's holder adds 10° and 25°.

For the full breakdown by knife type, see how to pick the right angle for each knife.

Tumbler Original or Tumbler Pro for a griller?

Pick the Tumbler Original for a casual griller and the Tumbler Pro for a pitmaster who likes to fine-tune. The Original keeps things simple, with 15° and 20° angles plus a diamond disc and steel honing disc, none of which swap out. The Pro steps up to a 4-layer diamond disc and an EdgeBoost ceramic honing disc in a heavier build, and its discs can be changed.

Those changeable discs give a pitmaster whose knives take a beating two upgrades: the Tumbler Coarse Diamond Disc #150 repairs chips, and the Tumbler Pro Whetstone Disc Set (3000/6000) gives a finer finish. Check the sharpener before buying either one as an add-on. They fit only a Tumbler Pro bought after June 1, 2025, which has a hex recess sitting just above the screw threads, and they won't work on any Tumbler Original.

Line the two up on Tumbler's Original-versus-Pro comparison chart, or read what separates the Tumbler Original from the Tumbler Pro.

When isn't a sharpener the right grilling gift?

Skip the sharpener if they already maintain a whetstone kit and enjoy it, if most of their knives are serrated, or if they mostly pull pork by hand and rarely slice. If they want a pit accessory, buy that. Tumbler makes sharpeners and knives, not pit gear.

  • They're a whetstone devotee. If freehand stone work is the hobby itself, a guided sharpener skips the part they enjoy.
  • Their knives are mostly serrated. Tumbler can't sharpen serrations, so check the knife roll first.
  • They pull, they don't slice. If pulled pork is their whole menu, give the Tumbler Digital Gift Card and let them choose.

FAQ

What do you get a pitmaster who has everything?

A sharper edge on the knives they already use. Most BBQ kits cover the pit and the tools but not a way to keep the slicing knife sharp. A Tumbler Rolling Knife Sharpener set fills that gap.

Is a knife sharpener a good gift for someone who grills?

Yes, if they trim and slice their own meat and their knives are steel with a smooth edge. A sharpener with a honing disc gets used all year. Skip it if they love sharpening on whetstones.

Can a rolling sharpener sharpen a long brisket slicer?

Yes, in sections. Sharpen part of the edge, move the blade in the holder, and overlap the sections, using light pressure. With a tall blade, set the sharpener on a cutting board so it lines up with the edge.

Will it sharpen serrated or granton-edge knives?

No for serrated: Tumbler's FAQ says the roller is "not suitable for serrations." For granton-edge (scalloped) slicers, the FAQ doesn't say, so check with Tumbler support before you sharpen one.

What if it's too late to ship?

Send the Tumbler Digital Gift Card, delivered by email. It works no matter how late you order, and the pitmaster picks the set that fits their knives.

Can they return or exchange it?

Yes. Orders from Nov 1 through Dec 31, 2026 are returnable until Jan 31, 2027, and other orders get the standard 30 days for a full refund. Since the refund goes to the original payment method, the giver should be the one to start it.
